The role of education in facilitating social and economic progress is well accepted since long and with these factors; education plays an important role in lives of people and is critical component for overall development of society. The economic condition in drought prone regions is poor and subsistence type exists, which proves to be a hindrance to education. Education is the most effective instrument for ensuring equality in opportunity and for overall development of individual in specific and of a region as a whole. But drought prone regions are lagging far behind the national average due to one or more reasons.


The paper broadly supports the hypothesis that the effects of drought on rural educational structure can be seen as both – result and cause which differs within the ecological settings of India. The problems associated with education in drought prone regions of India are manifold, complex and inter related; the major outlining factors are poverty, non- availability of resources, treating children as workers, inadequate facilities in educational institutions, caste, gender and economic differences cause major hindrance in the process of education in these regions.


The analysis clearly outlines the role of education with respect to livelihood in drought prone regions. It also focuses on its relationship with economic, social and demographic attributes like livelihood, caste, gender, size of landholdings and responses towards drought in the form of migration and diversification.
