Frequency of Inattentive Attitude of Mothers towards Child’s Milestones Among Mothers of Lahore

Abstract


Objective: Assessment of knowledge of mother relating to child’s milestone achievement from the birth to three years of age. For assessing the awareness of mother relating to intellectual, physical, emotional, social and language development of a child.

Study Design: Cross sectional study

Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out from Jan to Mar 2018 at the Mayo Hospital Lahore.

Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in Lahore. The sample consisted of 300 mothers and the draw was through non-probability purposive sampling. Structured questionnaire was used for the collection of data. In order assess the questionnaire’s authenticity, pilot study was conducted. Data was entered and SPSS version 20 was used for analysing the data with 95% confidence interval and 5% error margin. Value of p less than 0.005 was considered significant statistically.

Results: The mean age of 300 mothers was 30 years between 20 to 30 years of age. 64.8% (0.002) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can start roll over. 68.3% (0.022) mothers had no knowledge that when a child cant start sitting with support. 58% (0.030) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can stand with support. 70.4% (0.005) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can run forward. 76.8% (0.004) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can start recognising basic care givers. 76.1% (0.003) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can pay attention to his own name. 62% (0.002) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can himself feed with finger food. 72.2% (0.000) mother had no knowledge that when a child can indicate need for urination and defecation. 80.3% (0.001) mother had no knowledge that when a child start showing shyness to strangers. 72.5% (0.000) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can form a complete sentence. 57% (0.000) mothers had no knowledge that when a child can say double syllable words. 56.3% (0.014) mother had no knowledge that when a child can name the pictured objects.

Conclusion: It has been concluded by the study that mothers do not have sufficient knowledge about the physical development of a child and awareness of mother with respect to intellectual, language and social development of a child is extremely poor.
