To evaluate the effects on the health of Medical students with the use of performance enhancing drugs

Abstract


Objective: The main aim of the study was to find the effects which were caused by the use of performance enhancing drugs in medical students.

Place and Duration of study: This study was carried out in a duration on 14 months from December 2018 to February 2020 in King Edward Medical University Lahore.

Study Design: It was a cross sectional study.

Materials and Methods: A total of 100 students from medical college were selected randomly and divided into 4 groups i.e. second year, third year, fourth year and final year. There were 25 students in each group and a carefully designed questionnaire was given randomly on alternate days in each group. Proforma was sealed and later analyzed.

Results: 19-25 years was the mean age of the students who were filling the questionnaire. Maximum use of performance enhancing drugs use was seen in male students of 22 years and least use was seen in male students of 19 years of age. In females, maximum use of these drugs was seen in age group 22 years but the ration of males using PEDS was significantly higher as compared to females. Least use of PEDS was seen in female age group of 25 years and 19 years. Percentage in these groups was only 5%.

Conclusion: The results of our study showed the greater percent of male students use PEDS as compared to female students. Most common use was seen of the energy drinks containing caffeine. Our study shows that the number of students using the PEDS are greater than expected and it is especially greater in students who are involved in extracurricular activities like body building or other sports.
