TEACHING METHODS IN TERTIARY HEALTH INSTITUTIONS; THE NEED FOR APPRAISALS

Abstract


Teaching as a profession is performed by a faculty within a curriculum that is planned and offered in response to societal, professional and educational values and expectations. The choice of teaching method(s) to be used depends mainly on the information or skill that is being taught as well as the attitude of learners. This article reviewed teaching methods employed by most tutors/lecturers in our tertiary health institutions in Nigeria vis a vis the preferred method(s) of teaching by students. Evidence points to the fact that the lecture method tends to be the most widely used method by tutors. Even with the advent of modern educational technology equipment’s, very little has been incorporated to better improve the lecture method. Lack of proper monitoring, the quick to finish syllabus syndrome among others have been identified as reasons why some tutors prefer the lecture method. In conclusion, it is highly recommended that authorities of tertiary health institutions should from time to time carry out an appraisal of the teaching methods employed by most of their staff vis a vis the preferred teaching method (s) by students. Tutors of tertiary health institutions are encouraged to always adopt student-centered approach while teaching.
